This is a full court pairs drill. One defender (who is IT) stands on the free throw line in the backcourt with their back to the nearest basket. The offensive player stands on the baseline under the basket. On a coaches whistle the offensive player attempts to run at any speed or with any strategy to the opposite endline without being ‘tagged’ by the defender. If they are are tagged, they must then attempt to ‘retag’ the player. The player who is ‘NOT IT’ is the one attempting to get across the far baseline without being ‘TAGGED’. This is a simple, but tremendous footwork and balance drill which your players, especially the younger one’s will enjoy.
This is a drill that requires concentration, team work and peripheal vision. Not to mention passing and catching the basketball. You must have 5 players and 3-6 basketballs.
Find a basketball court with baskets on the side. The length of a real court is too long.
Player shoots, rebounds (only once) if necessary and shots again. If player scores on either attempt, they score two. If they miss, a make believe competitor scores two.
Play game to one hundred. Player keeps score in head while playing. When shots are made beyond three point line, score three.
When player gets to one hundreds before fake competitor, player wins. When player win consistently, they are improving their shooting, rebounding and dribbling skills as well as conditioning as player runs from basket to basket across the half court.
Player stands 1 foot from ring facing basket, coach stands under the bucket with a ball. Coach passes to player and calls out either; – pass: player pass straight back to coach – shoot: player shoots quickly – drive: player drive to bucket hard on one side (next time drive called they go to opposite side)
This is a team favorite for years, and is good for any age players. The players are able to practice offensive and defensive skills, and helps them to dribble while keeping their eyes up and seeing the floor. It is a great drill to build up ‘intensity’. most of all, it is FUN!!!
Player starts at free throw line extended and 3 pt. connection. Player starts jumping between legs coach then yells ‘EXPLODE’ player then comes off of between legs dribble and explodes to basket for layup. Make sure player stays LOW and EXPLODES. Do five lay-ups on each side of floor. Then make them pull up for the ‘J’.
Next: same position on floor: player is again stationary but instead of between legs, have player standing dribbling behind the back, again let him (her)dribble a few dribbles then yell EXPLODE . This drill will give game like situations and teach them to go to bucket quick and strong.
Six cones are set up in two lines of three. These lines are exactly parallel to each other and are approximately ten feet apart. You can set this drill up along the sidelines or on a stage as we do.
