ONE-ON-ONE SPOT DRILL

Instructions

  • player 1 has the ball and stands directly beneath the basket. player 2 stands between player 1 and the basket.
  • player 1 dribbles to any spot on the floor, but not further away form the basket than three-point range.
  • player 1 sets the ball down and gets into a defensive stance.
  • player 2 follows player 1, picks up the ball, and gets into a triple threat position.
  • The two players play one-on-one until player 2 scores or until player 1 stops her. If player 1 fouls player 2, player 2 retains posession of the ball. The offensive player is permitted only three dribbles.
  • Play continues until a player scores eleven points, with each basket counting as one point.
  • The two players reverse positions and repeat steps 1-6.

Tips

  • The players should take the ball to a different spot each time the drill is performed.
  • The players should always square up to the basket and locate the rim to enable them to see the entire floor.
  • The offensive player should drive at the defender’s front foot.
  • The offensive player should utilize both shot fakes and ball fakes to get the defensive player out of his stance.
  • The offensive player should occasionally use a jab step directly at the defender to keep her off balance.
