Pattern Drill
Passing drill with 5-8 players encouraging teamwork and concentration.
Instructions
A small group of players form a circle. The diameter of the circle is about 15 feet. The leader or captain starts with a number of balls one less than the number of players. Usually we break a team of 14 into 2 groups of 7, then give each leader 6 basketballs. He starts with a chest pass to a player across from him, then that player passes across the circle to another player, then that player passes across to a different player, until every player has touched the ball and no passes were made to the person beside them. It makes a pattern when the ball has returned to the “leader”. When you have established the “pattern” introduce another ball…start off slow by doing the drill for a few minutes with only 3 balls. Then increase to 5, 6, or 7. Some varsity teams will be able to do 7 balls among 7 players.
Variations
Vary number of players from 5-8. vary number of basketballs.
Tips
Encourage all types of passes and hitting the target in the chest, or beltline, depending on the pass.
Skills
Each player must concentrate on throwing a good pass and immediately catching another pass. When it is done well, it is working concentration and passing
