The Wall Drill
This was my favorite drill in high school. It’s a conditioning drill that works the leg muscles to the max…
Instructions
Have each of your players grab a ball. Line them along one of the gym walls. Have every 4th player get rid of her ball. Those with a ball will turn and face the wall. Those without a ball will put their back to the wall. When the coach blows the whistle those girls with a ball raise the ball with both hands above their head and begin jumping trying to tap the ball on the wall as high as they can. All the while the girls who do not have a ball are doing wall sits (backs pushed up against the wall with their legs forming a 90 degree angle – basically like they are sitting in a chair without the chair). After 20 seconds blow the whistle. Each girl puts down her ball, moves to the next spot to her right and begins the appropriate action (ball taps or wall sit). Continue the drill in 20 second intervals until everyone is back to their original spot. This kills the legs so tell your girls to scream and yell and encourage their team mates all the while. (It really does help…)
Variations
Depending how in shape your team is you can vary the length of time for each spot. I think 20 seconds is a good time to start with.
Tips
Encourage the girls while they do it…if you are in good enough shape do it with them! I’ve found it is a really good motivator when the coach joins in.
